Co-Owner Confessions

So who are we?
We've been working for two years on PlaidWood Design. We're a husband and wife team, where Jason designs & builds all that you see here. Karissa takes care of finishing and helps with assembly, and runs the office side of things. When we don't have custom furniture clients, we build barnwood home decor items, as you see on the left. Our custom work for clients is listed on the right.
From 2004-2009, I worked as an assistant to a very high-end custom furniture designer. In fact, they built stuff that was so high-end, some of their finished products cost the customers more than my entire year's salary.
In that position, I was primarily the drafter. I'd take my the concept sketches from my boss and his client, and draft it in AutoCAD and Mechanical Desktop. Then I would program our 5 axis Shoda router CNC machine with the cutting specifications using MasterCam. Then I would test the G-code and edit it. Finally, I'd oversee the machine as it cut out the piece, troubleshooting any problems along the way. We then had assemblers, sanders, and finishers who finalized each piece.
Now, with my wife, I guess I do it all.

Why the Name?

When we set out to name this new business adventure of ours, we wanted something to reflect the quirky-ness of us, plus Jason's talent for building beauty out of little wooden odds and ends.
Jason used to work for a very high-end custom furniture designer, and at the end of the day, he'd bring home the scraps that were going to be thrown away. He'd put them together and make a little toy for the kids, or a wooden spoon, or a stool, etc. So, we thought of "OddsNends" for our business name, or something like it, but it just didn't stick.
Then of course, we came to plaid. Now, if you ask Karissa, she will tell you plaid is a color, one of her favorites. And plaid is made up of odds and ends of colors, so it was a perfect fit for us.
So here we are, a company committed to creating beauty out of the flotsam of the forest.
